| WHAT
THE HECK IS A LAN PARTY, ANYWAY?
LAN stands for Local Area Network. It's a computer networking term
that refers to a group of computers in a single location that are
connected to each other (either with wires or wirelessly) so that
they may share information. In the case of a LAN party, the information
shared is gaming information.
Multiplayer games are a totally different experience than playing
singleplayer games. Playing against other humans instead of computer
opponents can be challenging and fun. However, one can play against
other people online through the Internet and not have to lug their
heavy (and expensive) computer, monitor and whatnot to some basement
or hotel (where many LAN parties are held) to play. So why do people
enjoy LAN parties?
For one thing, they are usually lag-free. Lag is when your Internet
connection can't keep up with the frantic action of the game. Things
in a game that's lagging will start to run slowly or stutter. LAN
party connections are usually 50 to 100 times faster than Internet
connections because LAN connections are local. LAN gaming means
no lag.
Also, there's the social aspect to LAN gaming. If you play online,
you're usually by yourself, alone in your room. When you play at
a LAN party, you're there with other people (and in the case of
our LAN parties, a lot of other people) and can meet other gamers
and make new friends. Plus it's a lot more fun to beat another player
when you can see and hear their agony in person.
Other things you'll find at a LAN party include tournaments, file
sharing, console gaming, movie watching and more. There's always
something to do.
